Fresh thinking, engaged learning
The leadership team at Upstate Montessori Academy works together to unleash the power of each student’s own natural curiosity as a springboard to a greater learning experience, which is, itself, a foundation for success. Critical to that is the concept of letting a student’s own interests help to shape his or her own unique educational path.
The concept of “reading, ’riting and ’rithmetic” provides the foundation for a quality education, but a foundation is only a beginning, not an end.
At Upstate Montessori Academy, we build on that traditional foundation every day. Our students learn the Three R’s and much more: At UMA, our passion is to graduate well-rounded students with a thorough knowledge of classical studies, accompanied by a broad understanding of the world around them. As we arm students with knowledge, we also work to inspire them to use that knowledge to lead rather than follow. Our students:
Learn to respect others, which includes speaking respectfully to those around them, and especially how to disagree respectfully.
Are taught values that drive positive character development.
Learn the importance of service within the community.
Working together to develop leaders
As a vital part of instilling leadership values, our curriculum tasks older students to help guide their younger peers, which provides a unique opportunity for students to develop into successful leaders.

“The attention of little children is continually being drawn to one thing or other on their walks. They stop to observe and admire things they see. They are like explorers. This is a preparation for the adaptation to the environment.”
— Maria Montessori, The 1946 London Lectures
